Stop holding on to old shit. Yep, I cussed.

So since this is my tumblr and not my official work blog I’m gonna let you have it. Do you know why computers and electronics “don’t last like they used to”? It’s because they shouldn’t. Technology moves fast. If you’ve had a computer for 3 years it’s nearly an antique. The ONLY exception to this rule, and truthfully it only gives you like an extra year, maybe two, is buying top of the line. Even with that, it depends on the device.

I run into this all the time- “Why do I need to upgrade, what I have does EVERYTHING I need it to do. I don’t need all the bells and whistles. I don’t need the latest and greatest.”. That’s true for many… but what happens when something breaks? You were perfectly happy with your seven year old system but your scanner broke and now you need something that supports your OS 9 environment?? While all of it is *possible* and you can go mine for old shit, why? At some point something else is going to break your little bubble world. It’s just not reasonable to think you can embrace technology and attempt to stop time.

So what do you do? You upgrade in tiny spurts. It doesn’t break the bank and gives you options for the future. What if x, y, or z doesn’t keep upgrading? Then you find a new solution and try to get your data or important items into something more trustworthy. The best time to do this is within the first year your stuff is obsolete- or going obsolete. While OS 9 worked in Classic, you knew it was going away. If it’s going away it means you shouldn’t depend on it. Just stop it. Stop shaking your angry little fist at Apple or “insert your manufacturer of choice” about them discontinuing something you liked. It’s discontinued because it was not good. Or if it was good it was only loved by so few that it wasn’t economically feasible to keep it going. It’s not that I don’t have empathy, I just see it too often and know this is avoidable to an extent.

I thought I was an artist, but really I'm more a geek. Occasionally, I need to embrace the artistic side of me. Welcome to Marilyn's Geek Craft. I embrace all art that is tech related, or just created by a tech ;)
